One of the easiest and safest ways to give your cat or dog a “flea bath” is to simple give them a bath using Dawn Dish Soap.
So, does Dawn kill fleas? Yes, Dawn does kill fleas! And it does a pretty good job of it.
I learned about this after my buddy came over with his dog. (I have a cat).
I was wearing shorts and sandals, and within minutes, I saw a flea on my ankle and it started biting ME! Grrrr…
To say I was a bit angry was an understatement.
My cat is both an indoor and outdoor cat. She comes and goes pretty much as she pleases.
And even though she does go outside everyday, I never really had a problem with fleas before.
Well, a few days later and my cat was scratching every few minutes. Mostly under her chin and by her ears.
I checked her by moving my finger against the grain of her hair under her chin, and sure enough, I found a flea!
Somehow I got on the subject of my new flea infestation with my grandmother later that evening.
She has had cats and a few dogs all of her life. So she’s always been a great source of a kind of “DIY Wisdom” on all sorts of topics.
When I told her what had happened, she told me to just give my cat a quick bath using Dawn dish soap.
Just Dawn dishsoap for fleas.
So I did!
Was it worth the wounds on my hands and forearms where she scratched me (my cay HATES baths!!!)?
She pretty much stopped scratching right away.
And was good for a good six months before I had to repeat the process and buy more band-aids.
I have no idea where she got the fleas after that.
But fleas are a part of a pet owner’s life I guess.
But the important part of all of this is that yes, Dawn does kill fleas.
And it seems to do a really good job too!
So if your house is infested, or your pet plays with other cats or dogs with fleas, they’ll just get them again pretty quickly.
Dawn doesn’t “ward off” fleas. It just kills the ones on your cat at bath time.
But still, it’s a SUPER cheap alternative to flea dips, flea baths or other flea control systems.
It’s also a LOT safer for your cat or dog. And better for the environment!
You use Dawn to wash the things you put into your own mouth! So it’s pretty safe stuff.
And definitely what I’d recommend as a first line of defense for killing fleas on your cat or dog.
Pretty cool! Go Dawn!
Do you have any “old family secrets” to share on how to kill fleas safely and inexpensively?
