One Pennsylvania family received the shock of a lifetime recently. After more than 10 years apart, they have been reunited with their lost dog. It was a happy ending they dreamed of, but they never thought it would come true.
Abby is a black lab mix who ran away from home when she was only around four to five months of age. Her owner, Debra Suierveld, was devastated at the lost. She searched for the puppy before finally deciding that it was a lost cause. Given how young Abby was, Carly feared she had passed away in the dangerous outside world that she was unprepared for.
Debra’s daughter, Carly, was only 12 years old when her beloved dog disappeared. Today she is 22 and pursuing a college degree. After all this time, she did not expect the shocking news she received from her mother. At long last, Abby was back home.
Debra described her daughter’s excitement, saying that she was laughing and crying in her shocked and happy state. Debra herself got the call about Abby from Allegheny Animal Shelter. The shelter is located in New Kensington, Pennsylvania. She had been brought in to them after a man named George Speiring found Abby on his porch a few days before. His home is located only 10 miles from the Suierveld house. He contacted the authorities, and from there Abby was taken to the shelter.
With her family assuming she was gone for good and no longer searching for her, Abby could easily have been adopted out to a new family. Luckily for Debra and Carly, they had thought to get Abby microchipped back when they first got her. That microchip allowed the shelter to get in contact with her original family and made their reunion possible.
There is no way of knowing what Abby has been up to for the past 10 years, but she appears to have been well cared for. She now has gray hairs and a benign tumor, but otherwise is the same Abby they knew as a puppy. She still crosses her paws, drinks out of the toilet, and remembers commands they taught her. She now gets to live out her golden years with her family and their two other dogs. The family held a special pot roast dinner to welcome Abby home and celebrate their lucky reunion.
