There are many people who like the idea of having an exotic pet. Unfortunately, many of these people do not take the time to find out what is involved when it comes to raising the animal out of its natural habitat. One exotic animal that is becoming more popular for people to raise as a pet is a hedgehog. The main reason they are so popular is because many people find them to be very cute. The small size of the animal also makes people believe that they will be an easy pet to take care of. There are also many people who think hedgehogs can be cared for in basically the same way that you would care for a hamster or a gerbil. Nothing could be further from the truth.
The reality is that hedgehogs are wild animals. Hedgehogs do not make good pets for a number of reasons. First of all, they are extremely active animals when they are in the wild. They will usually move a couple of miles each night. Therefore, they will not be able get that amount of exercise when they are trapped inside a person’s home or yard. They are also a very solitary animal when they are in the wild. This means that they will probably not get along with any other pets that their owner has.
Hedgehogs will need to be bathed regularly. They are not an animal that you will be able to neglect for an extended period of time. It is also very important that the owner trims the hedgehog’s nails on a regular basis. The temperature of the area where the hedgehog is living is something that you need to pay very close attention to. This is because the hedgehog might try to hibernate if it gets too cold. If this happens, the animal could starve because it does not have adequate reserves of fat.
As you might imagine, you also need to be aware of the right things to feed a hedgehog if you are keeping one as a pet. They will usually eat many different insects. They really enjoy snacking on some smaller frog species and centipedes. You should not simply buy some dog food from your local supermarket and feed it to your hedgehog. That would be a very big mistake. Knowing how to properly care for your hedgehog will ensure it lives a long time. However, they shouldn’t be kept as a pet.
