Swedish furniture company IKEA has just unveiled its brand new line of pet furniture and accessories. The new Lurvig collection, which in Swedish means “shaggy” or “hairy,” is first being offered in a small pilot launch in five countries: France, Canada, U.S., Portugal, and Japan. The United Kingdom will see these pet products on IKEA shelves in early 2018.
IKEA executives reportedly found other pet furniture “quite ugly” and partnered with pet-loving designers and trained veterinarians to create the line. The inspiration behind the line was a perceived need for reasonably priced but still appealing pet products. The design takes into account the typical personalities and needs of both cats and dogs. Cat products offer quiet nooks for cats to curl up in. Dogs can get comfortable in pillow beds and get active with rubber balls. Lurvig currently features 41 pieces for canines and 34 furnishings for felines.. All are made with long-lasting, non-toxic materials.
Like many other IKEA products, these pieces are economically priced. The collection’s highest priced item is a $54 padded cat house. Existing IKEA furniture pieces have been transformed into pet-friendly refuges for furry family members. The new pet products can be integrated into some of IKEA’s most popular offerings. In line with the efficiency of IKEA items, many of the pet products can be collapsed then tucked away when they are not being used. The line also includes cat-scratch mats, leashes, and travel bags. There is even a shallow bowl that is designed to prevent dogs from eating too quickly. Spanish designer Inma Bermudéz claims that she is most proud of a pet cushion that is meant to be filled with used clothing and old towels belonging to the owner. The designer explained that the idea is to let pets get secure and relaxed with while smelling familiar scents.
These new pet items are not available to order online yet but there are rumors that all IKEA products could soon be available through Amazon.
