All dog owners know the importance of keeping their furry friends healthy. If you want your dog to live a long and fulfilling life, you need to be aware of what treats can actually be harmful to your pet. It is crucial that we are conscious of the food we are giving our pets and the places we are letting them get into in order to make sure their health needs are met. While many of us have a good idea of what a dog wants and needs, we still may not have all the answers.
We all know the recognizable image of a dog gnawing away happily on a bone. It’s become so ingrained in our culture that most of us don’t take a second look. What a lot of people don’t know, however, is that not all bones are safe for Fido to dig into. Many pet owners choose to purchase bones from pet stores where they are marketed as “bone treats” and come in a variety of flavors, shapes, and sizes. However, a recent study conducted by the FDA indicates that some of these treats should be avoided. In the report, 90 dogs received injuries after consuming specific store bought bone treats. The report also stated that 15 of those dogs died.
These prepackaged, processed bones are not the only thing to be avoided when choosing a treat for your dog. Cooked bones of any kind are potentially harmful to your pet, as well. When meat is cooked, the bones inside become brittle and prone to shattering. While your dog is chewing on a cooked bone, shards can easily break off, puncturing your dog’s mouth, esophagus, and even internal organs. Bone fragments can also cause choking and blockages further down the digestive tract. Cooked bones from all types of meat should be avoided, but especially those from chicken and other types of poultry.
If you are ever unsure about what is safe for your beloved friend, always consult with a veterinarian first. Dogs should also be supervised whenever chewing on a toy or a treat to avoid injuries, and unsafe food items should be kept far out of reach. Keep your companions safe and healthy by making smart choices for their snack time, and they’ll be sure to keep loving you for years to come.
